How sad! It's Christmas Eve-Eve and I'm uploading a Halloween picture! I am notoriously bad for letting photos sit on a memory card forever and never getting them printed! This is from Alex's first Halloween, obviously. We had just moved into our new neighborhood about 1 week earlier. Taking the kid around to collect candy was a nice way to get out and meet the new neighbors--and get some candy for mom!

Gettin' Organized

A few months ago I purchased a LV Neverfull. It can hold my files for court, cloth diapers, snacks, etc. It's NEVERFULL! However, it's not that easy to find anything since the bag has became my life's catchall. Recently, on a rainy afternoon, Alex and I decided to check out a small grocery in our new neighborhood. It was not all that, so we headed back to the car. I was elbow deep into the Neverfull with one arm and 20lb baby in the other. The keys were nowhere to be found. I felt like I was playing the strike game on The Price is Right; hoping to pull out the winning number--or keys in this instance. Despite searching the depths of the Neverfull for what could have very well been 15 minutes, I broke down and called thaKing to come to our rescue since he would undoubtedly be there quicker than AAA (despite the inevitable lecture that AAA does not come with). So now it's time to get organized so I don't loose my keys, gold Starbucks card, wallet, iPhone, etc. I found this fantastic item on Etsy. Etsy has everything! Love it!

Token Baby Post and Catch Up

Shhhewww, where has the summer gone. On June 15th we placed our house on the market. Last Monday we closed on the old house and on our new house. The last few months were spent keeping our house spotless just in case that potential buyer wanted to stop by and make an offer. That offer finally came and we spent the next few weeks packing and then moving. Uhhh moving! How do we accumulate so much STUFF! Nonetheless, in between all of the hard work, Alex has expanded our social life into the realm of birthday parties! We've been to three birthday parties in the last three months, all attributable to Alex's little friends. One party was at the Little Gym. Being a working mom, I had no idea this place even existed. Basically it's a padded room with balls, slides and bars to swing on. I had to get over the germ factor! It was so great seeing all the babies interact with one another. Alex's birthday is coming up and hopefully we have the house put together in time for that "first birthday, happy new year, we survived without killing ourselves, each other, or the baby party!".

Christmas Wish List

First comes the push gift, which you earn for lugging around 40 extra pounds in your belly and ass and pushing a 9lb baby out of your vag. I think there should also be a "I survived the first year gift". We have a had a great first year as parents. The first few weeks were rather shaky. We, like all new parents (more so me), were trying to figure out what the hell we were doing, trying to sort through all the info I we read in all those books, info we learned from classes, the interweb, and everyone's two cents, in order to be perfect, all the while being sleep deprived. Alex is a happy baby and great sleeper (just like his mom), so that has made our path much easier, I'm sure. Nonetheless, I want my "I didn't pack my bags and leave", "I didn't neglect the baby", "I didn't kill my husband", whatever you want to call it gift! Here's an idea:

To Pack or Not to Pack

The first contract on our house fell through. The elderly gentleman that entered into the contract to purchase our home never presented proof of financing, so we kept his earnest money. Thanks for providing the funding for the inspection on our hope to be 'new' home, old guy! Within 2 weeks we had another contract on our house! Who says the housing market is bad? All is a go but for the buyer's appraisal to be completed on our house. Given that I'm a pessimist, I don't want to pack a single thing until that appraisal is done. I just feel like something is going to fall through. Yet, that doesn't stop me from spending ~~hours~~ minutes on Pinterest, pinning new kitchen ideas, playroom ideas, etc. Here are some thoughts so far for the kitchen, but it will have to be on a smaller scale:

Given that we may, or may not be on the move (more to come on that snafu later), I've started using Pinterest to log my home decorating ideas and other pretties that I do not want to lose track of, from the interweb. Facebook has bored me for quite some time. I don't care what new cow you have for your farm. It is a huge waste of time. Then I find Pinterest to waste my time in a more 'productive' way. I already have a pin board of possible Halloween costumes for Alex and crafty ideas for around the house, as well as ideas for remodeling the kitchen of the house we may or may not be moving into! So follow me on Pinterest to see what I find next. Pinterest is like CRACK, so don't say you weren't warned!

On the Move...Hopefully

thaKing and I have been looking for a house for oh, at least the last two years. We are extremely picky and don't have an infinite budget. After seeing this one house for months and months on the local MLS, with it's bold paint colors and cluttered rooms, the price was reduced and suddenly it became worthy of a drive by. It is in the neighborhood where one of my best friends from high school lives with her family, pool and tennis courts. The house is on a culdesac (perfect for the kid =PFTK), playset in the back yard (PFTK), bigger yard (perfect for the kid/dog=PFTK/D), basement (PFTK/D) and two more bedrooms than we currently have (perfect for the grandmas=PFTG). The initial counter offer came with a demand to list our house with a realtor within one week. We pretty much said eff' off, your house is listed with a major broker and has been on the market for MONTHS! So we did FSBO. After busting our asses cleaning and hiding junk, in preparation for open houses, with no results, rushing home after work to clean/hide crap for people that stayed less time than trick or treaters, almost 90 days later we have a contract! In your face realtors and your 6% commission!

Being the pessimist, I am trying not to get too excited. But, I can't help but think of how I want to decorate and fill the rooms. Alex won't be using this anytime soon, but I'm thinking it may be a must for his 3rd birthday.

I'm not a big fan of themes, but damn this is cute, and it would match the bright yellow hall bath that will be Alex's:

We will also need new patio furniture since the haggler that made an offer on our house wanted 'extras' thrown in, which included the rusty wrought iron patio furniture that I was tired of anyway.

If all works out, I plan on having a lot of fun decorating this new slate! Stay tuned!

Summer Lovin'

"Big Al", as Uncle Krusty so affectionately refers to Alex, did not care so much for Uncle Krusty's pool. An hour of getting ready, only led to crying for every second that Alex was in the pool. I think swim lessons at the YMCA or time in Elka's baby pool may be in order.

Father's Day

Father's Day will forever be bitter sweet for me. Last year on Father's Day, I spent the day in the hospital with my best friend, my dad, as he was in the end of life stage of cancer. I deeply cherish all the time and memories I have of him, but I especially hold that last Father's Day with him close to my heart. As he lay there weak, he still gave me heartfelt smiles and held my hand. I wish I had been able to spend more time with him in those final days, but we had both said everything we had to to each other throughout the years, not just in this final weeks. I think of him every day, and when I start to get sad, like when I hear a particular Tom T. Hall song that reminds me of him, I find peace in knowing how honored I am to have been his daughter, learned from him, and blessed to have had such a wonderful relationship with him. Now I see my son with my husband and how they both light up at the mere sight of each other. I hope they will have as close a bond as my dad and I. And I will make sure Alexander Grant will know how great his namesake, Papaw Charles Grant, was.

Breastfeeding--The Things 'What to Expect' Didn't Tell Me to Expect and Other Ramblings

I've been thinking about writing this post for sometime. No one in my immediate family breastfed (BF) their children so I had no idea what to expect. Friends had either forgotten details or feigned memory loss in order to spare how hard BF'ing can sometimes be. All and all, I knew it was the choice for me since breast is best. I read all of the BF info in What to Expect the First Year and even went to a BF'ing class. The main thing I took from the class was an image of a baby attached to what looked like a flesh colored bean bag chair. That thing was huge compared to that baby's tiny head!

When Alex was born he swallowed a lot of fluid. I didn't get to nurse him immediately. I thought "Great! How would we ever bond like all the books said!?". I feared he was going to grow up hating me! I finally got to attempt to nurse him 3 hours later and I began crying immediately when he wouldn't latch. thaKing was there to comfort me (this will be featured in the montage for his husband/father of the year award!) and explain, just like we learned in class, this is new to me and the baby, and we both have to learn how this all works. A nurse came in and helped me with positioning. You can look at pictures of holds all you want, but until you get that real live, moving baby, the pictures may as well be maps of the former Soviet Union. It worked! Alex latched and there was a little 'aw' sound that let me know he was swallowing that priceless colostrum. That was one of the best moments ever. Here was this tiny person that we made, I gave birth to, and was getting his only means of nourishment from me. We had trouble with latching/positioning again and a nurse helped me and got us back on track, again. Just like golf lessons, as long as I have the pro to line me up perfectly, I can be the next Annika Sorenstam. How would I nurse him when I got home?

Our last day in the hospital, my milk came in. I woke up to two huge cantaloupes on my chest. Alex had his very own bean bag chairs--yet they were not as soft as bean bag chairs, more like coconuts. In the class I learned you can become very emotional when the milk arrives. I remember thinking "whatever, that won't happen to me." I was a freaking basket case! I could barely compose myself to talk to the midwife that came into discharge me. I almost lost it when the photo person showed us the slide show of Alex's 'hospital' photos. So yes, apparently I too became a stereotypical, hormonal, emotional wreck!

We did great when we got home. However with the constant feedings, I felt like a Holstein cow. I skipped applications of udder cream in the middle of the night occasionally. This resulted in baby vampire mouth! My nips became sore and cracked and eventually started bleeding. It was such a sad sight to see Alex delatch and have blood on the outside corners of his lips. Of course he notice no difference. The internet can be your enemy. I read let the nips air dry, put wet tea bags on them...yep, all that made it worse. Use the udder cream religiously at first! Eventually when your nips turn into leather like an old nude Euro sunbather, you won't need it anymore.(Please disregard the forthcoming lack of transition--however I did mention there would be ramblings).

No one mentioned the pin-like stabbing sensation in the nips for about the first 12 seconds of nursing. While cringing, I remember doing the countdown so I would know the pain was almost over. One day that pain just vanished without much notice, other than the realization that there is no longer a porcupine rolling around on my headlights. Apparently I developed nips of steel, or at least so I thought.

On my first day back to work, I was stuck in dependency neglect and abuse court for 3 hours. This was the first day away from my boy, and did I need my pump! I felt as if I was about to spray the whole courtroom with breast milk! There I was representing deadbeats that can't give up drugs to take care of their kids (much less caffeine and sushi like I had) and I desperately needed to get on with the process of delivering up a bag of nourishment for my son. One attorney suggested getting a manual pump and going to the restroom to pump. That was an idea, yet disgusting. Have you seen the people that go to courthouses?! I'm not talking about just the lawyers either.

Speaking of, I'm getting so tired of pumping. I am quickly approaching the 4 month mark of being a mother pumper. I really want to resist giving Alex formula. My milk is better for him, and plus, it's free! Another reason to justify spending money on my Starbucks (be it decaf) addiction!

A few weeks ago while nursing Alex, I felt this sharp pain in the headlight. Was the porcupine back? Doubtful. Alex has been gnawing away on his thumb so we knew teeth were on their way. thaKing dared to stick his finger in there, and sure enough, Alex has 2 teeth about to debut on the bottom. I now see why a lot of moms stop BF'ing at around 6 months! TEETH! I admire those that make it 1 year and those superheroes (usually SAHMs) that make it 18 months or so. How can this be done? I want to throw my pump out the window and not risk having my boobs bitten off by my infant!

Solid Like a Rock

Alex is quickly approaching 6 months of age! We had the go ahead from our brilliant pediatrician to start some solids at 4 months, but we decided to wait until the 6 month mark in order to reduce the risk of food allergies, even though they do not run in our families. Tomorrow, I am going to a First Spoonfuls class on making your own baby food. I can't wait! The class is taught by a nutritionist that I went through pre-natal yoga with. While I was blowing up, she was still her beautiful slender self with only a baby bump. But I digress. thaKing and I eat pretty healthy, well at least for me at dinner. He eats healthy all the time and that's why our body fat percentages differ by double digits. I digress yet again.

Since we are eating things such as sweet potatoes, butternut squash (winter), and basically unprocessed foods, it should be no trouble to fix a little pureed side for Alex. However, MODG just posted an entry about the book, Baby Led Weaning, where you skip the purees and go straight to actual real solid food. WTF? Alex has no teeth! How can he eat solid, solid food? Apparently they suck the nutrients out and learn to eat like real people without choking and dying. Oh, I am going to be that person in the Spoonfuls class that asks about this just to throw a wrench in the works!

Speaking of stirring things up...something I am not looking forward to, all the CRAP! I readily shout the praises of cloth diapers like the biggest earth mother. However, I'm awaiting my own reevaluation of the cloth diaper situation when the diet changes. Stay tuned.

Mother's Day

I've always appreciated everything my mom has done for me and celebrated her on mother's day. She is selfless and loves me unconditionally. Nonetheless, I didn't expect the fiercely intense love I would have for my son. My son. Seems so amazing to write that. He is only 18 weeks old, but I would kill for him if I had to. I totally get that "momma grizzly" identity now.

Being a mother truly is the hardest and most rewarding job ever. It's not just a cliche. The only time I sit down many nights is for nursing or eating dinner, myself. Sometimes there is a combination of both. I never know what the morning will hold. Will Alex wake up at 5 am or 7am? I have never been known as a morning person, but when he flashes me that gummy smile, the clock stops and the longing of wanting to be fast asleep fades away. Mother's Day was one of those mornings. After Alex's 6:30 am feeding I tucked him in bed with us. How I love those moments, laying next to his tiny being, hearing him breath and the sense that he is so secure knowing that I am there to take care of him. Alex did get me a gift certificate for a 1 hour massage, but nap time together, gummy smiles, and some laughs were the best gifts ever, but it won't be necessary to return that gift certificate.

Proud Grammy

thaKing family celebrated Alex's first Easter in my hometown of London with my mom (aka Grammy, Granny, TBD). We went to the church I was raised in and it was great to see those old familiar faces and show off Alex in his Easter john john. Despite discovering he can squeal really loudly now, he shockingly did not make a peep during the service. Afterwards I ate way too much chicken & dumplin's and sweet potato casserole. Mmmmm good! But after all, I'm still basically eating for 2. And have you seen this boy? At 4 months he is nearly the size of the 1 year old that lives next door! Anyway, I think we all had a great day, except maybe Elka since it is monsoon season and she didn't get to chase any birds. And yes, that is the hat mentioned here. The picture doesn't do it justice. I think I may have to wear it Friday in salute of the Royal Wedding!

The Bag Lady

As I trudged into the office this morning, I carried my Louis Speedy 25, breast pump bag, gym bag, and lunch bag. I had more bags than a homeless woman! Oh I also had my makeup bag stuffed into the Speedy. It's official, I am a working mom that puts her makeup on at work! Given that the Speedy was filled to capacity, I think it may be time for an overdue upgrade to the Neverfull.

Springing to Life

Ahhh spring is in the air, finally! Tulips and daffodills are blooming and trees are starting to leaf. Keeneland opens Friday, Easter is coming up, and we may be going to Oaks this year. That begs the question of what to wear. I'm loving this dress from Nordstrom and with Ebates I would get 5% back! It doesn't do much for my attempt to add color to my wardrobe, but when paired with an obscenely large colorful hat, that may just do the trick.

It is Easy Being Green!

This St. Patricks's Day I want to celebrate how I am helping my baby boy live green, in the environmental sense. Before baby Alex's arrival I started reading all about cloth diapering. I hated the thoughts of contributing to such waste. I was met with animosity from relatives that were familiar with the cloth diapers from years ago. Long gone are the days of sharp pins and stinky diaper pails filled with bleach and water. After doing my research we chose to go with BumGenius 4.0 with the snaps. It is an all in one diaper with an insert and outer shell. When the diaper is soiled ,the whole thing goes in the pail or wet bag after being sprayed with odor remover. We wash them every other day in special detergent and they are good to go. Cloth diapering helps cut down on diaper rash and we have had minimal leaks and no poo showers like I unfortunately was on the receiving end with a disposable Alex was wearing.

I have invested approximately $350 in buying the diapers, pail, and wet bag, all of which will last Alex until he is potty trained. The diapers come in several great colors and prints. The bum geniuses will then be available for another child or can be sold. Recycle! There will still be the expense of energy, water and detergent for washing but that will be less than the hundreds of dollars we would incur annually from disposables. Alex has a total of 23 cloth diapers which keeps us in supply with an every other day washing. Today I ordered flannel wipes and bottom cleaner so we can also do away with disposable wipes, which are more of an inconvenience at this point. Stuffing a wipe into the narrow opening of the diaper genie is not pleasant. The flannel wipes will go into the diaper pail ,or wet bag, and be washed with the diapers.

BumGenius is having it's spring sale right now, which is a great time to buy some to try if you are thinking of going green. Sites I like to order from are Cotton Babies and Diaper Junction. No more running out to the store when your low on diapers, or taking out the trash bag filled with disposable diapers, that will be in a landfill for hundreds of years to come. And don't worry, I'm not ready to trade in my stilettos for Birkenstocks!

I love me some blueberry scones or muffins from Starbucks, but even the low-fat versions, when you can find them, are not the slightest bit healthy. I am trying to embrace the healthy alternative by eating Fage Greek yogurt, blueberry flavor. It is deeelicious! Other yogurts seem really processed, but the Fage cup has two sections: one for the yogurt and the other for the blueberries. I'm sure there are still some preservatives, but it tastes like fresh goodness to me. Hopefully this will help me lose my muffin top.

Nursery Time

I love Alex's nursery. When we found out we were having a boy, I immediately started searching for bedding and found out the boy choices were extremely limited. Basically the options were blue, or well, blue. I had no idea whether he would like trucks, sports, airplanes, or trains so how could I predetermine a theme? Besides, I really don't like themes. Thus, I along with my talented mother, designed and created our own with a striped pattern of primary colors and lime green with white polka dots. There is a loose theme, however. We came across Sunny the Sock Monkey and he happened to match the bedding perfectly. Now Alex has a sock monkey bank and whole little monkey outfit, thanks to Aunt Julie. There is also the feature of prints of Alex's cat, RC, and of course the big white dog, Elka. thaKing took these and IRL they look like paintings. Hopefully he likes his kitty and dog. So far so good. The bunting and monogrammed photo frame are from Just Lovely Katherine. She is so talented.

How haute are these Carlos Santana 4" pumps? I'm not sure where I'm going to wear them, but I had to have them! Maybe I will wear them when I go back to work in a week and a half. It will be a sad day without my boy, but maybe my new killer shoes can make me smile a little. How better to make my entrance back into the courtroom?

Introducing Alexander Grant King

On New Year's Eve thaKing and I received the best gift ever, our healthy baby boy, Alexander Grant King. Weighing in at 9 lbs and 21" in length, he was large just as expected. It has been quite the adjustment. Everyone says having a child completely changes your life, but you can't imagine how much so until you are running on sleep deprivation and completely submerged in constant care for this new little being. It's the hardest job I've ever done, but the best, all at the same time. Everyday my love grows for Alex. I go back to work in just under 3 weeks, and I expect that day that I do, will be one of the hardest days ever.

Six days to go until BB King's estimated arrival! He is now affectionately referred to as Alexander Grant King. Alexander and Grant are two of my great-grandfather's names and my dad's middle name. By the way, Alexander also means 'King.' It pleases me so much to have settled on a name that means something and has family ties. This boy has some mighty big shoes to fill with that name!

Pregnancy fortunately has been very smooth sailing for me. I had some fatigue at the beginning but no nausea at all. Supposedly that is indicative that you are giving birth to a boy. Baby Alex has been quite the traveler with trips to Marco Island and L.A. There was no slowing us down. However, now as I am at the 39.5 week mark, I am so ready to get this over with and move onto the main event of meeting Alex in the outside world. Getting up 4 times per night to go to the bathroom, not being able to find a comfortable sleeping position, not being able to bend over, or move around very easily for that matter, is really starting to wear on me. I pray everyday that Alex is a healthy, happy and normal baby and that his birth goes smoothly. However, God willing, the sooner we get to that moment the better at this point :)

The Perfect Eyeliner

I would use primer on my eyes to 'try' and prevent my eyeliner from migrating from my upper lash line to the crease of my eyelid. The primer only helped slightly. Saturday, I splurged on the Stila Smudge Stick Waterproof Eye Liner. Love it! It doesn't fade, smudge, or run. It stays put! I got the purple tang color and it is so vibrant. I think I may go to Sephora for the rest of the colors!

thaKing and I made a huge batch of Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Cookies last week to share with our neighbors to celebrate the arrival of their new son. Thanks for the recipe, Valerie at Up to Date! thaKing claims to not be a big pumpkin fan, but combine the gourd with chocolate chips, and needless to say there has been a request for more! This is so easy to make and delicious!

2 and a quarter cup all purpose flour

1 tsp. baking powder

1/2 tsp. baking soda

1/2 tsp. salt

1/2 tsp. cinnamon

1/2 tsp. nutmeg

1/2 tsp. ground cloves (I left this out just b/c I didn't have any on hand)

1 cup butter, softened

1 cup sugar

1 16 oz can of pumpkin

2 eggs

1 tsp. vanilla

2 cups chocolate chips

In small bowl, combine flour, baking soda, baking powder, all spices, and salt; set aside.

In large mixer bowl, beat butter and sugar till creamy. Add pumpkin and eggs and vanilla.

Gradually add flour mixture.

Stir in chocolate chips.

Drop by spoonfuls on greased cookie sheet (I used Silpat)

Bake at 375 for about 18 minutes, or until edges are lightly browned.

Let sit 5 minutes on cooling rack

Elka Needs a Brand New Bed

Before Elka gets relegated to slightly less than top dog with BB King's arrival, it is my absolute intent to spoil her even more! Her 2nd birthday is Saturday (tear') and she took a birthday pizza with her to Dogtown Doggie Daycare yesterday, to share with her friends. I'm a bad mom, and apparently thaKing is a bad dad/photographer! We have no pictures of the pizza before it was devoured! We heard it was enjoyed by all. Anyway, Elka has been in need of a new bed. She has outgrown the one she sleeps on in our room ,and since it was a rush to purchase when she was a puppy, I've never been thrilled with the pattern. You may recall that my very talented mother helped me sew the king size bed featured here for Elka that we keep downstairs. Here is the inspiration from Fleabag Beds for her new 'upstairs' doggie bed... a nice bright trellis print with piping. Yes piping! That will be a new feat if I can pull it off.

LA Lady

thaKing and I just got back from LA last week. He was there for work and I tagged along just to hang out. We stayed downtown and ventured out on the subway to Hollywood. Hollywood is surprisingly small. The walk of fame meanders on and on, but it's basically one big block that encompasses Grauman's Chinese Theater and the Kodak Theater. We also went to a taping of Jimmy Kimmel Live. OMG, TV is sooo fake! We were told to clap and act super excited for the intro to the musical guest that wasn't even there! Part of work obligations included going to a reception at the Walt Disney Theater, home of the LA Philharmonic. The building is one of the most architecturally inspiring I have ever seen.

We also went to a professional boxing match and saw Oscar de La Hoya, Magic Johnson, and Eddie Murphy. The main event went the full 12 rounds and ended in a draw. I see that as getting your money's worth, however most people were really upset about the draw. We also found the fashion district which was like a huge flea market with the blocks and blocks of handbags! The bags weren't knock offs, but I think I bought a Big Buddha bag sans Big Buddha hardware, for $22! (Not the one pictured above) My favorite part was going to Santa Monica. This was the shopping I had been looking for, all within a few blocks: Kitson, Nordstrom, Tory Burch, Anthropology!

It was great to finally get home. Elka had been staying a Dogtown all week. She was exhausted and excited to see us, needless to say.

Ever Growing News

ThaKing and I are expecting our first (maybe only one depending on how this all goes ;) ) child in January! It's a boy (Baby Boy King...BB for short) that is already measuring larger than average! Of course he is! ThaKing and I were each over 9lbs. and all of our nephews have weighed in at over 9lbs. each. I haven't been sick at all, so pregnancy fortunately has not been that bad. I do sense sleeping will be becoming an issue. Stomach sleeping is of course ruled out and sleeping on the left side is the side of choice for those interested in reducing the likelihood of varicose veins. Sleeping on the back is not advisable because of the risk of putting too much weight on the vena cava artery which can cut off circulation to BB. So then the only options are sleeping on your left or right side. Now the left side is becoming less and less of an option. I think while laying on my left side BB is resting on my sciatic nerve because there is a tingling sensation all the way down my left leg. Oh the joys. I should have read What to Expect Before You Are Expecting!

I am LOVING all of these prints from Z Gallerie! However, it is noted there is a shortage of White German Shepherd art to be found anywhere. There are pieces on Etsy, but I just soon prefer any painting/photo be of my own Elka. Thus, I have requested that thaKing do a photo of Elka sitting with a red background, to be printed on canvas (think Blue Dog inspired). He just purchased a 5D Mark II, so he is jumping at every opportunity to put it to good use. Can't wait to see how it turns out! More info to come on why the search for doggie art, soon.

Mad About Mad Men

I am truly addicted to Mad Men. The new cover of Rolling Stone proclaims Mad Men is the best show on TV. I dare say it is one of the best shows on TV, ever! It has the best writing of any show since the Sopranos, probably because Matthew Weiner was/is involved in both of them. The era, the style, the symbolism! This weeks episode is the best yet. Don berates Peggy because, I think, he holds her to a higher standard than any of the other copywriters. She is there because she earned the position, but only because he put her there. This is evident when he tells her she should wake up each morning and thank him ,and Jesus, that she has been given another day. How else would a woman have that position? They know some of each others secrets and yet truly see each other for what they are. Can't wait until next week's episode!

It may be raining and dreary in the Bluegrass today, but in less than two weeks I will be celebrating my 33rd (there, I said it) birthday with the lovely lady that brought me into this world, my wonderful Mom, on Marco Island. We have not been on vacation together in 10 years and we are both really excited to just to get away, relax, shop, shell, eat, and shop some more. Marco Island is far south on the gulf side of Florida, so hopefully the tarballs will stay away.

My Dad is in the late stage of prostate cancer. I, along with so many supportive family members and friends, have been there every step of the way through surgery, chemo, and trips to Duke for a research study in which he was a participant. It is truly heartbreaking to watch my hero go through something so debilitating, especially when it feels like there is so very little I can do to help. I just wish I could fix him or help him be more comfortable.

Nonetheless, hopefully I am able to really help someone else beat cancer. Several months ago, I checked out the National Marrow Donor Program. I signed up to join the registry and received a kit in the mail a few days later. All I had to do was answer a few questions and collect a swab of cheek cells to return to the NMDP to be placed on the registry to possibly be matched with someone down the road for a potential bone marrow transplant. I encourage you all to do this. You never know. You may just have the right marrow to help save someone's life.

Mutt Strut

Today was the Lexington Humane Society's 13th Annual Mutt Strut at Keeneland. I have volunteered for this event the last three years. It's always a great time seeing all the different doggies come out to enjoy strutting their stuff for such a good cause. Last year would have been Elka's first strut, but she was at boarding school. Needless to say she and thaKing were ready to go this year. The Mutt Strut is a 2K fun walk but nobody told Elka. Apparently she was pulling thaKing wanting to run the whole way!

I miss the Banana Republic of old, where you could always find cute dresses and great work clothes. Although, the last three years it has been hit or miss, and usually falling more on the miss side. The style and quality has greatly decreased. Last year, I got a great deal on a summer suit, but my tailor had to completely redo the pants which were incredibly baggy through the hips. Nonetheless, I'm always a sucker for sales ,and since I'm luxe I get free shipping, so this morning I said why not to this dress. I guess I will find out in 7 to 10 days whether it's a hit or a miss!

Even though I don't watch as much 'crap' tv as I used to, I still try to find opportunities to watch almost any of the Real Housewives series on Bravo (with the exception of the ATL). thaKing groans, but is never surprised, to find the last channel viewed on any tv in the house was Bravo. Last nights RHONY episode showed the ladies, sans Jill and the Countess, going to the US Virgin Islands for Ramona's renewal bachelorette party on a yacht. Really? Stuck on a yacht with Ramona! I digress. Kelly initiated some nonsensical yelling and ranting towards Bethenny, basically because Bethenny was human and has emotions. Although Bethenny has published several books on healthy cuisine, Kelly states that Bethenny is not a chef but just a cook, since she has never worked for anyone she knows. Hmmmm, cognitive dissonance disorder? Bethenny, who is witty and acerbic, called Kelly the most unintelligent person she’s ever met. I am in total agreement! I represent a lot of crazy people and I think Kelly is crazy! I can't wait to catch part II next week! Hopefully, thaKing will be out again so he doesn't have a seizure from watching.

So I tossed in the tried and true traditional pink and green bottle of mascara by Maybelline for a shiny gold bottle of the lash lengthener from Yves St. Laurant. I made the mistake of buying it with thaKing in tow. Least to say there was some commentary about the $30 price tag. Nonetheless, it works fabulously! Long , luscious lashes. The fact that I sometimes remember to use Latisse doesn't hurt either. There is no phantom lash prints left trailing behind on my eyelids and little to no flaking.

In the middle of drinking beer, enjoying the sunshine, and throwing money away on horses at Keeneland, Friday, I received a call from a dear friend, Ramsey. She informed that she hoped she wasn't ruing my afternoon, but her husband, Robert, just found out he has a brain tumor. That is so her to worry about everyone else first. She continued to say, fortunately, that the tumor was operable and probably non-cancerous.

Ramsey and Robert were just married in 2008 and welcomed a beautiful baby boy in the fall of 2009. No one is ever prepared for a situation such as this, let alone such a young family. I truly think everything will be fine, but it does make me stop and think how truly blessed we are to get up everyday and be healthy enough to walk or run with the dog, for instance. Instead of wondering what to wear to Keeneland, or which hat to wear to the Derby, there are much much greater worries for some. Please remember them in your prayers.

thaKing and I had a fabulous weekend. I started by purchasing my Coach Cal Maker's Mark bottle! People camped out for these things! I woke up at 7:15am (in your face campers!) and got to a certain store about 8:00am, where I had success purchasing one of these coveted items in the past. I was about the 25th person in line. The Cal bottle is safe and secure amongst the fine china in the china cabinet. Is that tacky or just Kentucky?

We went to Keeneland that afternoon and had a great time enjoying the beautiful weather. We were comfortable in the box away from the record crowd. I am so spoiled now! We were pleasantly surprised to see Josie and Mitch! Their never too young to go to the track!

Today, we went to London to see the fam and enjoy some o so delicious chicken and dumplins' made courtesy of my mother. It was great to spend time with everyone. Elka had a blast being off leash and chasing birds.

Keeneland opens this Friday and the weather is supposed to be spectacular! It looks like we may actually have a taste of spring here in the Bluegrass! My morning will start bright and early by getting in line for the commemorative 2010 Maker's Mark Keeneland bottle. This year's bottle is a tribute to Coach John Calipari who successfully resurrected the UK basketball team. Maker’s Mark will donate proceeds from the sales – estimated to be about $300,000 from 24,000 bottles – to an extension program that is bringing the UK Symphony Orchestra and students from the UK School of Music into public schools and communities throughout Kentucky. I am not one of those crazy die hard UK fans, but thaKing and I already have somewhat of burgeoning Maker's Mark commemorative bottle collection going, plus it's a great cause.

That afternoon will be spent at Keeneland with thaKing and some of the fabulous Bunco babes where we will hopefully win some $$. I recently purchased the above dress to wear. I just need to find time to get my spray tan on so as not blind the horses!

I did purchase and receive this dress. It is quality fabric and manufacturing, something that seems to lacking now a days. I ordered a size 6 and it is a wee bit tight. Although Boden offers free returns,I find the unforgiving tightness of the dress to be inspiration to keep running and working out, just in case I intend to wear this dress without the need of spanx! Anywho, I just went through the new Boden catalog this weekend and found these new must haves...just awaiting to learn of my tax liability before hitting 'submit order' at checkout!

Athleta update...something that I had not thought of....the GAP outlet which is only about 45 minutes north of here, now has Athleta in their warehouse mess of offerings! I usually detest the GAP outlet because I refuse to 'dig' for items, even if they are $5/each. However, I think a trip to the outlet is a must in the coming weeks to dig for Athleta items!

The Shamrock Shuffle

This past Saturday thaKing, my cousin LA and I did the Shamrock Shuffle. It's a 3k race that benefits the great cause: the Pat Smith Habitat for Humanity Foundation. Equipped with new running tights, new running shoes, new Nike+ sensor, and performance enhancing singulair ;), I was able to beat thaKing (17.27) by just less than a minute (chip time 16:43)! We are also very proud of LA for finishing! We had a great time at the race and thereafter cheering on the CATS to winning the SEC!

Project Dogbed

My first project on my new sewing machine was a KING size dog bed for Miss Elka. I purchased the pretty print from the remnant section at Hancock fabrics for about $5. The fury side (which will regularly be the upright side) was about $10. With thread and Velcro, the whole thing cost $25. I used a full size mattress cover, folded in half for the stuffing. The time spent to make it with my Mom, Aunt Betty, Kendra and Lindsey was priceless of course! For perception, check out one of her other dog beds in the background.

I am so over winter! I am super busy with work now, trudging back and forth to the courthouse, in the snow and freezing cold. New Shoes (but not in the rain)

I've been hitting the treadmill pretty hard for me as of late. This is mainly due to the 7lbs (+/-) I gained since vacation in August. I use that reference since after vacation, I may have went to the gym, which is only 3 minutes from my house, 3 times! When I finally returned to the gym, along with the hoards of humanity on January 1st, I find the best personal trainer I have ever had has left! Buh bye, barbell barbie :( She was the fourth trainer I have worked with so you think I could, I don't know, work out on my own by now, but I'm not really a self motivator. Oh using 12lb weights are just fine, forever! There's no need to increase!

Anyway, back to the treadmill....I have probably ran about 17 miles in the last 2 weeks. One of my little toes began to hurt and later turned blue! I contacted the organizer of the running group I joined on facebook, (but have yet to actually run with) which is affiliated with the local running store, Johns Run/Walk. Shocker! He said I probably need new running shoes! ThaKing made fun of me when I immediately ran out and bought those new Nikes! He will rue making fun of me when I leave him in my dust in this year's Shamrock Shuffle! That's right... rue!

Paw'r Hour

ThaKing, Elka and I went to Buster's Billiards and Backroom tonight for Paw'r Hour to benefit Home at Last Animal Sanctuary. No worries about rushing home to let out your furry friend because this was a happy hour where the dogs could attend. It was a great time. A lot of the Thursday Night Live regulars were there like Bella, Matilda and Zeus. Elka was exhausted to say the least.

White Chocolatini Goodness

The marathon that is Christmas is over and decorations are down. Maybe it's part of growing older or working so much, but the holidays certainly fly by now! We had a great visit with thaKing's family in OH the weekend before Christmas and then traveled to London to see my parents with the favorite grand-dog in tow. My dad would be very upset if Elka was a no show. We had a silent night there with a power outage for about an hour. Of course, as soon as we found the coal oil lamp the power came back on. It was great to spend time with everyone there.

I had a very domestic Christmas as far as presents go. I received a sewing machine from my parents and a crock pot and new sauce pan from thaKing, all of which I was actually very excited about. Hopefully I have my mom's knack for sewing. The woman made her own prom dress, which was beautiful and I could not even fit into it when I was 12 year's old let alone a senior in high school. I have great aspirations of making a giant dog bed for Elka similar to this doggie duvet, pillows, drapes, and sundresses. Hmmm....maybe I should be practicing now.... Also, one of my favorite presents I received was this (in almost life size) portrait of Elka from my favorite photographer, Jeremy King Photography .

The Best Christmas Presents Ever

It's true, it is the thought that counts when giving/receiving a gift. The most memorable Christmas presents I have received and may ever receive were from my dad and Aunt Anita. In 2003 my Grandmother, Anne, passed away. She loved to cook, as do I. Over the years she, as any great chef does, accumulated many recipes and created some of her own. Opening her recipe box you would find many of her handwritten favorites, rummy scores from games she and Papaw would play religiously, and postcards from their grandchildren. I suppose this little box was a place to keep all things important. For Christmas 2004 I received "Mamaw's Cookbook" from my Aunt Anita. She compiled many of the handwritten recipes that were discovered in the recipe box. into a binder with Mamaw's smiling face on the front. The book included the favorites which we all grew up on, such as cream candy and pound cake. I miss Mamaw often, but opening her cookbook brings back a heartfull of great memories.

This Christmas, I am extremely blessed to have another holiday with my Dad, which is a 'best' present in and of itself. Last Christmas Dad was at the end of what would be his last round of chemo. He felt fairly well and displayed a nice shiny noggin. This year, we find ourselves basically out of available treatment options for his cancer. We've spent much of this year driving to Duke, sometimes twice a month, for a clinical study he participated in there. Regardless of why we were traveling there, it was great to spend so much time from my busy life with him and my mom on those long road trips. He is a little fatigued these days and his numbers seem to be looking well, despite the doctors telling us the disease continues to progress. With that, I fully appreciate that this is a Christmas to treasure and savor.

As to another physical gift, when I was little, Dad would recite from memory, Twas the Night Before Christmas. I knew exactly what I wanted when I saw the latest holiday offering from Hallmark was that traditional story, in a recordable version. Apparently everyone in the country also thought this was a great gift, as well since ALL of the stores sold out. Even small county Kentucky Hallmarks sold out. My mom found one on Ebay and didn't have to pay too much of a premium. Dad was a ready and willing participant to record his voice. Thus, for years to come, I (and maybe that kid that we may or may not have) will always have my Dad to read Twas the Night Before Christmas.

Mmmmm Butternut Squash Soup...

I am continually trying to perfect my roasted butternut squash soup recipe and I think I stuck the landing tonight with this recipe:

Ingredients:
1 large butternut squash (4+ pounds raw)
3 cup organic chicken broth
1 large onion (chopped)
3 cloves garlic (minced)
2 Tbsp. honey
2 Tbsp. unsalted butter
1 tsp. nutmeg
olive oil
salt
black pepper

Garnish:
crème fraîche
toasted wheat croutons

1. Preheat the oven to 400F.

2. Slice the squash in half length wise. Using a spoon, core the seeds. Place in a roasting pan. Liberally coat with olive oil, salt, and black pepper. Fill about 1" of the pan with water. Roast in oven for about half an hour or until the flesh is easily pierced with a paring knife.

3. Remove from the oven, and let cool so it is not too hot to handle. Remove the skin and roughly chop any large portions of the flesh remaining.

4. In a large pot over medium heat, add 2 Tbsp. of butter. Once the butter has stopped bubbling, add 2 Tbsp. of olive oil.

5. Add the onion and then the garlic garlic. Cook until the onions are translucent and starting to lightly yellow, about 6 min. Add the nutmeg and stir. Cook for another 3 min.

6. Add the roasted butternut squash and stir. Let cook for about 5 min before stirring again. You should start to see carmelization on the bottom of the pan. Add the honey and let cook again for another 5 min.

7. Add about 1/2 cup the broth and deglaze the pot. Once all those nice brown bits are up from the bottom of the pot add the remaining broth. Bring to a boil and let cook for about 5 min at a low boil.

8. Turn off the heat and let cool for another 5 min.

9. Puree the mixture in a blender until you have a nice smooth texture. Return to heat and lets simmer until you are ready to serve.

10. Garnish by adding a dollop of crème fraîche and croutons. Serve very hot.

This evening me and one of the bunco girls went to BelleAge Medispa's open house. All products were 25% off and many offered rebates as well! I purchased Latisse and an intense pulsed light (IPL) facial to zap off the damage I received in the Dominican. I debated on buying two IPL services, but thought one treatment did the trick the last time. Then much to my surprise I won an IPL treatment in the door prize drawing! I can't wait to start using the Latisse and plan on getting the first IPL after Thanksgiving. Hopefully I will have new fresh skin (brown and red spots sloughed off) and long lashes by Christmas!

I move from NKY and great things come! WTF? Recently the Queen City became the home to Ikea (which is at the same exit as the Ballard Designs Outlet), Cincinnati Premium Outlets off of I-75 and now H&M! Jimmy Choo shoes starting at $129! Need I say more. H&M opened in the Kenwood Town Centre on November 5. To date the US site does not offer online shopping, but the Euro site does. Given that I don't understand Sweedish, that site is a little difficult to navigate.

I regrettably learned tonight that one of the downtown fixtures, Lewis Gill Cobb, the shoeshine man passed away. I would bump into him weekly. The typical conversation started with him telling me how nice I look and then leading to him asking if I needed a shoe shine. I probably did on many occasions, but never accepted his offer.

While I was a prosecutor Lewis was cited several times by the city for peddling without a license. We could not dismiss any more charges and he understandably didn't want to pay a fine and plead guilty. He, with the assistance of the honorable Gatewood Gailbrath, set the matter for trial. I didn't want to prosecute Lewis. After all, he was just trying to make an honest living, shining shoes. Maybe I was the first person to ever read the "peddling without a license statute" and concluded that since it said one is guilty of peddling without a license when they are selling goods without a city license. I asked myself what 'goods' is Lewis selling...it's a service. I contacted Gatewood and we thought it would be worth a shot for him to file a motion to dismiss the charges since this ordinance didn't even apply to Lewis' operation. Judge Bouvier, a jurist whose talent's are wasted in district court, consulted the Uniform Commercial Code, and ruled that Lewis was not selling goods, but offering a service and thus could not be in violation of peddling without a license. All counts against Lewis were dismissed. From that point on, Lewis could shine all the shoes he wanted along the streets of downtown Lexington.

Lewis was such an intriguing character that a UK student produced a documentary about him. I purchased the movie, but am yet to watch it. Lewis would ask me weekly "have you watched my movie yet?", which I would honestly tell him I had not had time to do so yet, but was going to. He was one of those unique fixtures of downtown, along with Tony the shoe repair man and Butch, those folks you look forward to running into everyday. I will miss him terribly and can only hope that he is shining shoes in heaven.

In Search of the Perfect Sweater Dress

I'm somewhat of a curvy girl. A little junk in the trunk and a slight Buddha belly, so finding a flattering sweater dress has taken some investment of time. A few contenders are the J.Crew Dream lycée turtleneck dress, however I think it looks a little dowdy.

Next is the Anthropology Lancet Arch Sweater Dress. This may be the winner. If only we had an Anthropology store so I could try this on in person.

My fav is from Athleta, is the Vitis Sweater Dress, but of course it has sold out in any normal size in grey!

All of these would potentially look great with the new Marc Fisher Agnes riding boots I just ordered.

ThaKing and I had a great time greeting the neighborhood trick or treaters. I found out about 4:15pm that trick or treat began at 5:00pm. I rushed to shower and get ready. ThaKing had to handle the first round of pint size beggars on his own, and this was Elka's first Halloween, mind you. She nearly burst out the door and ran over the kids! I ran down the steps in my bathrobe almost handing out an unintended treat, just in time to grab Elka! After a few kids, Elka got the hang of it and laid nicely at the front door, forcing me to step over her long frame.

Fall is here! The opening day of Keeneland was plagued by a monsoon so I did not deem it worthy of attending. Hopefully next Friday the weather will be better. Regardless, tomorrow thaKing and I are going down the road to Boyds Orchards to pick out some pumpkins. I hope they have the ghost pumpkins! I plan to make butternut squash casserole or soup for dinner (still undecided on which). Sunday we are going to brunch at Jonathan's in Gratz Park, thanks to taking care of a traffic ticket for someone. I love getting paid in gift cards!

Busy Weekend

Last evening we went and looked at a house that is for sale in the Stonewall neighborhood. It is on 1/2 acre and has a fabulous yard! A yard...not a .10 acre yard, but 1/2 acre. However, the house is slightly smaller than the one we live in currently. It is really hard to envision how our furniture will fit in another house...given that we bought our present house and pretty much all the furniture that goes in it, simultaneously. Then there is the whole "can we sell our house" issue! I fear change.

Tonight, we (and by we I mean me, thaKing and Elka) are all just laying around catching up on the DVR since thaKing and I were both gone last week. Tomorrow will be spent watching the Tide roll over the Cats, I'm sure. On Sunday I am going to London to spend time with the parents and see my sister and nephew Parker. I haven't seen him in forever so I can't wait. Somewhere in the midst of all that I hope to find time to plant the mums I bought during last week's monsoon. I need another vacation or to win Powerball.

Baby Cakes

I had the pleasure of co-hosting a baby shower for my BFF Susan today. She is one of the most beautiful baby mommas. We went with a sweets for the sweet theme and only served desserts. I provided cupcakes from Baby Cakes. All baby cakes are freshly made, never frozen, from scratch and it shows. We enjoyed the Sweet Dreams--comforting brownie cupcakes with chocolate chips nestled inside & covered in vanilla buttercream and the Natural Beauty --moist vanilla cupcakes topped with creamy vanilla buttercream. The Sweet Dreams were a little chocolatey for my liking but they were fresh you could certainly tell.

Gator Bait

thaKing and I went to the UK football game on Saturday. The only fortunate thing that occurred was the monsoon that was last week stopped right before kickoff. There is always a scintilla of hope when the Cats play the Gators, that after 20 some straight years of being beat by the Gators, the Cats may actually win. That hope was slashed immediately in the first half of the first quarter. At least we had the entertainment of the guys sitting in front of us. One fan became angry with the guys because they were booing the Cats. The angry fan called them out for wearing Wildcat blue and booing the Cats. I thought I was going cry laughing when one of the guys yelled to the angry fan "hey guy, hear that, I'm booing a bad call that was made against the cats." Guess you really had to be there though.

The Dog Paddle absolutely wore Elka out! She finally perked up on Sunday around 6:00pm. We arrived at the Dog Paddle on Saturday about 10AM. We were informed to get there early because the water gets nasty. I'm thinking lots of dogs, saliva, so that makes sense. It was something much worse. I will leave it at that.

Elka walked into the Woodland Park pool on her back legs alone. thaKing was trying to prevent her from pulling, which resulted in lifting Elka up in the air. Pinch collar or not, Elka saw other dogs to play with and she desperately wanted to get to them. I proceeded to sign all of us in while thaKing tried to control the howling Elka. I affectionately referred to her as the crazy dog, while signing in without a dog in immediate tow.

Once inside the fenced area, we released Elka from her leash and immediately lost sight of her. Was she headed towards the water? No, just running laps around the pool and chasing any dog that would give chase. Eventually I caught up with her and leashed her up to lead her into the wading pool. After-all, the water was why we were there. She walked in the water and was slashed and howled at by another dog. She wanted none of that and leaped from the pool to run some more.

After she tired out some, she accepted the fact that the water could be fun, as she chased tennis balls into the water. I think she also watched her new friends Callie and Ajax enjoying the water, so that helped her acclimate. We left after about one hour and half. Elka napped some when we got home but then I took her back out to go to the Barkery since she was so good at the Dog Paddle. She slept until about 8AM on Sunday to just go outside and then come back in and sleep until 9:30AM. Why can't we have a Dog Paddle every weekend!

Ahhh... one of the reasons I wanted a dog...to go to the Dog Paddle at Woodland Park of course. The Dog Paddle is this Saturday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the Woodland Aquatic Center. (The rain date is 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 13.) The cost is $10 per dog with a limit of two people. There is an additional cost of $5 per person beyond the two. Proceeds will benefit the creation and maintenance of dog parks in Fayette County. All dogs must have a 2007, 2008 or 2009 rabies tag and proof of vaccination. I can't wait to take Elka!! She will love, love, love it! If she is not too stinky and wet after the swim, I think I need to follow through on that much discussed trip to the Barkery afterward.

So I've been very lax in blogging, obviously. I've been swamped with work and with the interception of facebook into my life...I've neglected the much more creative outlet of blogging. Anyway..Elka graduated from boarding school at Durham Kennels at the end of May. We are overwhelmingly pleased with how well she is doing. She still has puppy outbursts occasionally, but all and all it is an absolute pleasure to walk her around the 'hood and take her to events such as the Farmer's Market and Thursday Night Live.

In July I celebrated my Super Sweet Sixteen Redux (i.e. 32, there I said it). Jennifer Miller with Baker's Bliss made my cake which was fabulicious. Yes, it was planned for the dress to match the cake! Several of my friends joined me and thaKing at Atomic Cafe to celebrate my birth. We decorated foam coozies with foam stickers. You are never too old to enjoy crafts! It was a blast and I truly appreciate my friends coming out to make getting older way more fun!

Vacation Finally!

In just over 1 week, thaKing and I are headed to the Dominican Republic! The last two vacations consisted of going to the ACL Music Festival in Austin and Las Vegas in the winter. A nice beach vacation is overdue. We are staying at Dreams in La Romana. It looks fantastic! I can't wait to take introductory scuba lesson in the pool, go windsurfing, kayaking, jump on the ocean trampoline, and play tennis. Will 8 days be enough?

Solid Shampoo

A friend with beautiful blonde locks recommended the Lush Blonde shampoo bar. Her hair looks great so I decided to give it a try. Shampoo in a bar form...it was like buying a block of cheese wrapped in bucher paper with a similar label. It's a different concept to lather up your hands to wash your hair but if it works, why not. The bar is very soft and and the lather quickly produced for application to my hair. The end result was seemingly shinier more manageable hair. I am now a new fan of Lush.

How perfect would that have been...wedding invitations adorned with the usual love stamps, but not just any love stamps--love stamps fit for a King and Queen. The five year anniversary is coming up...maybe we should throw a "Can't Believe We Made it this Long" party and use these on the invitations! Also, if you haven't caught on, we're not pretentious, just the last name is King and we were tagged with the nicknames, thaKing and Queen, by one of our friends.

The Busy Life of the Queen

How can I seem to be so busy and not even have a 'nury' kid? May was quite the whirlwind. You may have caught on due to the lack of posts. My parents and I traveled to Duke University to determine if my dad was appropriate for any of their clinical trials. We learned from very hot, Dr. George, that dad has a good prognosis, given that the prostate cancer has not spread to his bones or organs and there are treatment options still available. It looks like we will soon be returning to Duke, where my dad will be in a trial to receive a drug that was just recently approved for treatment of kidney cancer and appears to work well in stabilizing other cancers. To say we were reinvigorated with hope from all this news would be quite the understatement.

On a sadder note, I went home to London over Memorial Day weekend to say goodbye to one of the dearest, sweetest ladies. My BFF Lindsey's grandmother, Mary Ray Luker (aka Granny) passed away. She was a beautiful lady bubbling over with excitement and spirit any time you saw her. She set the example for how to organize and throw a lovely party/luncheon. I always think whenever I'm hosting something, Granny would have done so much better. For example, she loosely tied thread around rose buds to prevent them from opening up prematurely. I bet she knew a trick or two that even Martha Stewart was not aware of! She always sent thoughtful thank you notes...an act that is sadly absent from today's culture. I will always cherish the time she took to take Lindsey and I to Shakertown for archeological digs, to see the Nutrcraker, and numerous shopping trips among many other things! Being considerate of others to the end, she planned her own funeral, years in advance. With jazzy upbeat music and wonderful poems, you could feel her presence. She will be truly missed.

Elka was gone for the month of May at boarding school to learn how to be a great dog. She was already good you see. Jeremy and I both feared she may come back with a broken spirit. Any change of personality lasted only about the first couple of hours that Elka was home. Then she was back to harrassing the cat and playing with squeaky dog. She learned lots while away at school. On command she waits patiently at doors until she is given the 'ok' to go through. Now if we could only get me trained on how to correct her for those rare opportunites that she messes up.

I went to my first hot yoga class tonight and decided to OD with back to back classes. What was I thinking? I had not done yoga in well...maybe 2 years, let alone in a 90 degree room. I loved it! The instructor noted class went by faster than usual since there were no beginners...fooled him! Also, fortunately, I was not the only girl with junk in the trunk having problems balancing. I plan to go back next week...maybe just not OD, since Elka will be home from boarding school by then. Gotta have enough energy to walk with my girl!

Elka is 6 months old today! We love her so much! It's such a pleasure to come home, after a crappy day dealing with crazy people, and see her tail wagging and be so excited to see mom. She was 'hit on' Sunday by another shepherd owner at the duck pond, when asked "hey is your dog spade." Does that line really work? And yes she is. She doesn't need to hook up with some black and tan shepherd to better her self esteem. But it's nice to no her beauty is recognized. I look forward to many more birthdays with Ms. Elka.
